Sonia Braga is the Brazilian screen legend that rose to stardom in her native country through work on a series of lavish soap operas for the Brazilian network TV Globo. By her early twenties, Braga was a major soap opera star, a status comparable to goddess in Brazil. She appeared in a number of Brazilian films, gracing each with her captivating sensuality, but it wasn't until her role as a woman with two lovers in Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1978), that she gained international screen stardom. Her most famous movie appearance (and her English language debut) was in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), in which she played three roles, including her enigmatic performance as the "dream heroine".

Throughout her extensive film career, Sonia Braga has never lost touch with her humble roots. Born to mixed-race parents, she went to work at age fourteen to help support her widowed mother and six siblings. Her personable and honest character has been untouched by fame, and instead she uses her appeal to deliver messages of solidarity with human rights causes. For PASS THE TORCH, Sonia Braga reflects on her experiences growing up in Brazil and how these have informed her artistry and concern for humanity.
